Job Description

Position Overview

The Deputy Associate is part of a team who assist the Judge in the day-to-day management of Chambers and Court. The role of the Deputy Associate is to assist the Associate and deputise for them when they are on leave.

This position does not involve exposure to family law matters.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

The Deputy Associate works closely with, and is supervised by, Judge Lucev’s Associate. The role of the Deputy Associate includes, but is not limited to:

  • Court attendance, including the provision of administrative assistance in the courtroom.
  • Assisting Judge Lucev’s Associate in the day-to-day management of chambers. (including the preparation of correspondence, liaising with practitioners and court staff, using the
  • Court’s case management system and assisting with docket management).
    Preparing court orders.
  • Undertaking complex legal research and writing, and proof reading of judgments as required by Judge Lucev.
  • Managing chambers in the absence of the Associate.
  • Other duties as required.

Formal Qualification

LLB or JD or graduand with credit plus average. Please attach copies of all academic transcripts.

Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrated ability to undertake legal research and legal writing.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and an ability to communicate with people at all levels.
  • Demonstrated organisational skills, including the ability to manage several processes at once.
  • The ability to adapt to changing situations and priorities.
  • Tolerance, diligence and the ability to work as member of a small team.
  • A high standard of ethical behaviour.

Eligibility

Employment with the Court is subject to the requirement of the Public Service Act 1999 (Cth). The following is also required:

  • Australian citizenship – the successful applicant must be an Australian citizen, unless the Chief Operating Officer waives that requirement.
  • National Police Check – the successful applicant must satisfy a Police Records Check and may also be required to complete security clearances during the course of their employment.
  • Health clearance – the successful applicant must be fit for duties, is required to complete a health declaration and may be required to attend a medical assessment to confirm their fitness for duty.
  • Successful applicants engaged into the APS will be subject to a probation period.

Interested candidates who have received a redundancy benefit from an Australian Public Service agency are welcome to apply. However, these persons cannot be engaged with the Court until their redundancy benefit period has expired (unless the Public Service Commissioner agrees otherwise).
