About the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission
The Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission is the national regulator of Australian Government aged care services. The Commission is responsible for safeguarding older people, engaging and educating the aged care sector, registering aged care providers and dealing with complaints and feedback about aged care. The Commission offers a variety of interesting and challenging jobs across most capital cities.
It is an exciting time to join the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission, with major reforms set to commence on 1 November 2025 to improve aged care in Australia. The Assistant Commissioner, Chief Counsel will be contributing to our role as a rights-based, risk led regulator that supports government’s objectives of ensuring the safety, dignity and wellbeing of every older person accessing funded aged care services.
About the Role
The Commission is currently seeking an SES Band 1 Assistant Commissioner, Chief Counsel. The Chief Counsel will work collaboratively and innovatively to deliver Legal, FOI and Privacy services in support of the Aged Care and Safety Quality Commission’s strategic and operational objectives. Reporting to the Deputy Commissioner Sector Capability and Regulatory Strategy, the Chief Counsel will have a critical leadership and enablement function within the Commission. The Chief Counsel drives change and innovation, builds capacity and delivers strategic and operational outcomes through the provision of a range of legal services.
The Chief Counsel is responsible for leading the Legal Branch to ensure the Commission’s compliance with legislation and for providing strong practical, solution focussed advice on a variety of complex matters, including policy implementation and reforms, regulation and legislative compliance.
Key Capabilities
To be successful in this role, you will have demonstrated ability to provide high quality legal services across a range of legal issues relevant to the Commission particularly in relation to aged care, regulatory compliance and associated litigation support. You will bring significant technical expertise in the delivery of complex legal services and the development of complex legislation. Experience in aged care, health, human services, or other regulated sectors across government/ the public sector is highly regarded. Success in this role will require exceptional judgment, problem solving and efficiency with high standards of integrity and professionalism. Tertiary legal qualifications and admission as a legal practitioner in an Australian Court are requirements of this role.

The successful candidate’s suitability of employment with the Commission will also be assessed through a variety of pre-employment check processes, such as:
- Satisfactory completion of a criminal history check and where relevant a Working with Children and Vulnerable People Check
- Providing evidence of qualifications
- Hold a minimum Negative Vetting 1 level security clearance or have the ability to obtain one
