Job Description
We have an opportunity for a Senior Research Officer in our Research and Sentencing team. You will prepare materials for publication; provide judicial officers with timely and accurate research and support services; and design, conduct and publish high quality research on sentencing and other areas of the criminal law for judicial officers, government departments and the community.
This is a permanent opportunity, however, we would consider a 12-month secondment from another agency.
THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL:
Prepare case summaries, Legislation and Case Digests, and Announcement items
Review, prepare draft material and conduct legal research in relation to legal issues addressed in the Sentencing Bench Book and Local Court Bench Book as required;
Contribute to the updating of the Criminal Trials Court Book if requested;
Prepare and review summaries for the Judicial Officers Bulletin as required and assist in the preparation and review of the Digest Flyer;
Write/contribute to articles concerning trends in sentencing patterns or current legal issues suitable for publication by the Commission;
Oversee or otherwise assist more junior members of the team
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:
Tertiary qualifications in law and no less than four (4) years’ experience in the practice of criminal law
Extensive knowledge of criminal law including sentencing law, evidence law and criminal procedure
High level oral and written communication skills
Demonstrated ability to produce legal text to a standard suitable for publication
Experience with legal research databases and standard office applications
Ability to work in a small team, as an active and contributing member, and autonomously
Supervisory skills

Remuneration package from $106,025 – $117,363, plus employer’s contribution to superannuation and annual leave loading.
