Legal Counsel (Intellectual Property)

Employment Type: 2 years Fixed Term
Duration: Part time, 3 days
Remuneration: $136,945 + 17% Superannuation (Pro-rata)

Why Your Role Matters:

The Legal Counsel (Enterprise) forms part of a team within UNSW Legal & Compliance which supports UNSW’s engagement with industry and IP commercialisation.  Reporting to the Head of Legal (Enterprise), you will provide sound, practical legal support in a timely and effective manner to assist commercial and IP-related transactions relevant to Knowledge Exchange and Entrepreneurship. The role also assists as required with general legal work of the UNSW Legal & Compliance team.

Key responsibilities include: Provide advice, in an ethical, solution-focused, timely, practical and effective manner, consistent with applicable law and UNSW policies and procedures.
Provide practical legal review, advice and drafting with a particular focus on intellectual property and technology commercialisation.
Provide timely and effective legal support to the Business Development Managers   in complex technology commercialisation transactions
Provide strategic legal advice to UNSW senior management (often on an urgent basis), and assist with the development of commercialisation strategies and legal frameworks
Assist with the development and delivery of legal training programs and projects.
Proactively contribute to UNSW Legal & Compliance team meetings and systems.
Who You Are:

Tertiary qualifications in law with a minimum 6 years’ PQE providing legal support for commercial transactions
Admission to the Supreme Court of NSW and a current practising certificate
Experience providing legal support for commercial and preferably IP/technology-related transactions, in either a high quality in-house or commercial law firm environment
Knowledge of IP law, particularly relating to protection and exploitation of patents.
Thorough understanding of the application of the Corporations Law to privately held companies in the context of commercial transactions in an innovation/ technology related environment
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
High level of attention to detail
