About the role

QLS has a permanent and full time or part-time (4 days per week) opportunity for an Admissions Compliance Officer (Solicitor) to join their Legal Practitioners Admissions Board team. The Legal Practitioners Admissions Board (the Board) team constitutes part of the Queensland Law Societies statutory obligations under section 662 of the Legal Profession Act to provide administrative support and legal services to the Board, including secretariat support.

Reporting to the Solicitor and Secretary to the Board, the Applications Compliance Officer (Solicitor) is responsible for:

  • supporting the Secretary with reviewing, researching, and processing applications for admission to the Board
  • providing high-level advice to the Secretary about these applications
  • guiding and assisting applicants
  • preparing written submissions in respect of complicated applications for admission and appearing on behalf of the Board before the Court of Appeal where required;
  • preparing briefs for Counsel and instructing Counsel and/or solicitors on complicated applications, trials, and other matters that may come before the Supreme Court;
  • providing assistance to the Secretary within the skill scope of the position.

About you

  • a qualification in law and admission (or eligibility) to the legal profession in Queensland.
  • experience in a similar regulatory role in a legal or professional services environment.
  • demonstrated research skills and the ability to identify and summarise key issues.
  • knowledge of, or the ability to rapidly acquire knowledge of, the Legal Profession Act 2007 as it applies to admissions.
  • exemplary customer service skills to respond efficiently to applicants and provide effective service.
  • high level interpersonal skills, including written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to liaise with and maintain effective relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders, including applicants for admission, Court officials, senior managers, members and staff.
