Job Description

The Australian Government is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified persons for appointment as President of the Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC).

The ALRC is a national independent statutory body which provides recommendations for law reform to Government on issues referred to it by the Attorney-General of Australia. The ALRC strives for excellence in research and legal analysis ensuring its recommendations to Government are implementable and evidence based.  The ALRC’s functions are outlined in the Australian Law Reform Commission Act 1996. The Commission is based in Brisbane.

The ALRC currently consists of a President and two part-time Commissioners (who are full-time judicial officers). The President leads inquires requested by the Attorney-General. The President is also the Chief Executive Officer and is responsible for the management and leadership of the ALRC.

To be eligible for appointment to the ALRC, candidates must be in one of the following categories:

  • the holder of judicial office
  • a legal practitioner of the High Court, or of the Supreme Court of a State or Territory (and have been for at least five years)
  • a graduate in law of a university, and have experience as a member of the academic staff of a tertiary educational institution, or
    suitable for appointment because of special qualifications, training or experience.
