The Attorney-General’s Department performs a vast range of functions within Government and we are looking for high-performing candidates interested in working in the following areas:

Justice and Communities Group is responsible for key aspects of Australia’s justice system, including the federal courts, tribunals and the family law system. The Group is leading a range of high-priority reform initiatives, including First Nations justice initiatives under the National Agreement for Closing the Gap, as well as reforms to address sexual assault, family violence and elder abuse. The Group includes the National Office of Child Safety, which is overseeing implementation of Australia’s National Strategy to Prevent and Respond to Child Sexual Abuse 2021-30. The Group is also responsible for a number of other important areas of law and policy, including native title, constitutional law and copyright law and policy. Lastly, the Group mangers the delivery of Commonwealth funding for legal assistance services, including through the National Legal Assistance Partnership with state and territory governments.

Integrity and International Group brings together a range of functions that contribute to Australia’s integrity and rights frameworks, with legislative and policy responsibility for administrative law, information law, anti-corruption and fraud, human rights, modern slavery and human trafficking. This includes a number of high-profile priorities, such as the National Anti-Corruption Commission, Respect@Work, religious freedoms, the Privacy Act review, and public sector whistleblower reforms. The group provides international law advice to government agencies and manages international litigation on behalf of the Commonwealth of Australia. The group is also responsible for whole-of-government legal services policy including the management of legal risk, Commonwealth legal assistance policy and funding, and establishing and coordinating Commonwealth engagement with Royal Commissions.

The National Security and Criminal Justice Group is responsible for a range of national security and criminal justice laws and policies, including transnational serious and organised crime, cybercrime, cross-border data access, anti-money laundering, counter-terrorism, counter-espionage and foreign interference, electronic surveillance and law enforcement and criminal intelligence powers. The Group is also responsible for casework associated with international crime cooperation, parole for federal offenders and the High Risk Terrorist Offender framework, and for coordinating security arrangements for government and major events. The Group supports the Attorney-General to oversee legal issues and frameworks in relation to national security, intelligence and law enforcement to ensure they operate in a manner which at all times respects the rule of law.

The Enabling Services Group supports the department’s corporate and organisational operations, including strategy and governance, human resources, corporate services, and information and communications technology. Our work ensures the department can deliver its policy and program objectives. We are seeking committed, collaborative, service-oriented individuals to help Enabling Services Group achieve outcomes in a professional and solution-focussed environment.
