Job Description

The Attorney-General’s Department is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified persons for appointment as the Australian Government Solicitor (AGS).

The Attorney-General’s Department (AGD) delivers programs and policies to maintain and improve Australia’s law and justice framework.

The AGS is the leading provider of legal and related services for Australian Government departments and agencies and a key member of the leadership team within the AGD. AGS is a fully commercial and competitive legal practice with a significant team of lawyers, with offices in every capital city. It is a fully integrated business within the AGD.

The AGS is responsible to the Secretary for the overall management of AGS as a model legal practice and as a significant provider of legal services to Commonwealth Government entities generating on a fee for service basis a mutli-million-dollar revenue base.

High calibre candidates will be senior lawyers with successful experience in managing large and/or complex operations, preferably with a professional services focus. They will have a track record of exemplary leadership and management capabilities that will ensure AGS is able to drive the Government’s reform agenda.

The successful candidate will form part of the Senior Leadership Group and play an integral role in implementing the department’s Transformation Strategy 2022-24 and Action Plan, a whole-of-department program of work to create a more agile, unified, collaborative and influential organisation. Transformation will improve the way we work and embed a continuous improvement approach to better deliver on our objectives.

Information for applicants

Applicants must be admitted as legal practitioners in the High Court or in the Supreme Court of a State or Territory and be Australian citizens. Applicants must also be able to obtain and maintain an Australian Government security clearance.
