To accelerate this vision, the UNSW Faculty of Law & Justice has established a Sustainable Development Reform (SDR) Hub @UNSW with strategic objectives to support action focussed collaboration and build enduring and diverse research, education and knowledge exchange partnerships.

Background
The UNSW Faculty of Law and Justice established the Sustainable Development Reform Hub in 2022. The Hub is in an exciting growth phase and is looking for analysts, researchers and technical specialists at every level to propel it into the future. It is truly transdisciplinary offering the opportunity to work with specialists from outside your own area of expertise on a daily basis.
The Hub’s strategic objectives are to:
Support action-focused collaboration between UNSW and external institutions and communities, designed to catalyse a new generation of ambitious and pragmatic legal, policy and governance reform, to realise the integrated environmental, social, and economic objectives recognised in the Global Goals for Sustainable Development (Global Goals).
Build enduring and diverse research, education and knowledge exchange partnerships extending across and beyond UNSW, that are aligned with the Global Goals and characterised by a sustainable long-term financial model and an applied interdisciplinary approach.

The Hub works closely with partners, donors and governments from around the world to provide independent, expert advice and analysis around three pathways;
a. Unlocking the zero-carbon transition
b. Development beyond GDP (focused on natural capital accounting)
c. Making economies work for people and nature

SDR Hub projects and partnerships on sustainable ocean development

The SDR Hub’s Ocean Cluster coordinates a range of projects and partnerships focused on supporting efforts of national governments and other stakeholders to achieve sustainable ocean development. For example, the Hub hosts the Secretariat of the Global Ocean Accounts Partnership (GOAP), which brings together more than 20 national governments, international organisations, research institutions, and representative bodies from the private sector, to develop and implement systems for measuring and managing process towards sustainable ocean development. GOAP functions as an implementation support mechanism for relevant political commitments agreed by the serving Heads of Government represented on the High-Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy. The Hub also works closely with governments of several Pacific Island Countries on knowledge development for scaling of financial investment in the sustainable development of ocean-based economic sectors.

Join the Global Ocean Accounts Partnership Fellows Program in 2023!

UNSW, via the Sustainable Development Reform Hub, as Secretariat for the GOAP, are excited to launch the new GOAP Fellows Program in 2023. The Fellows Program seeks to support future research and practice leaders, to develop applied research and knowledge exchange at the intersections of economics, social sciences, politics, law, public policy, environmental science, environmental markets, natural resource management, data science and development.

In 2023 we are looking to significantly expand the team in all areas where we work and draw together people with broad interests and experiences from the private sector, NGO, government and academic communities to fill these posts. We are therefore offering multiple Research Associateships, Senior Research Associateships and PhD Scholarships to develop a global team who can collaborate on some of the key challenges facing our communities. In particular we are looking for those with interests in natural capital accounting, ocean policy, applied economics, social sciences, spatial planning, geospatial analysis, conservation, data science for sustainable development,  software and data engineering. If you have expertise or interests in another field relevant to our work we welcome your application too.

Fellows under the GOAP Fellowship Program will be work closely with the team at the UNSW Sustainable Development Reform Hub and its global network of partners, offering opportunities for research innovation, agile co-working with external stakeholders, and real-world impact. The Hub strives to provide long-term career opportunities for all staff, and an enduring community for those who move on to pursue other opportunities.

We will be inviting people to progress to the formal application process on a rolling basis until our 2023 allocation is fulfilled. Research Associate and Senior Research Associate opportunities are available for immediate start, subject to the usual recruitment processes.

Applications from across the Asia-Pacific, Africa, and Americas are strongly encouraged, with scope for flexible remote working. The Hub also strongly encourages applications from entrepreneurial change-makers outside the university research sector (government, business, non-government institutions, etc), including talented applicants in relevant fields that have not yet applied their skills specifically to solving ocean-related sustainable development challenges.
