Job Description

Position Overview

The Chief Justice is responsible for the management of the administrative affairs of the Federal Court and the effective, orderly and expeditious discharge of the business of the Court under the FCA Act. The Court has 54 judges and registries in 7 locations nationally.

The Chief Executive Officer and Principal Registrar (CEO/PR) assists the Chief Justice in the management of the business and administrative affairs of the FCA. The CEO/PR is the accountable authority, for the purposes of the PGPA Act, for the Federal Court of Australia (the Entity), and is responsible for the appropriations for the FCA, FCFCOA and NNTT; and the provision of corporate services to the two federal courts and the NNTT. The CEO/PR is the Head of the statutory agency, for the purposes of the Public Service Act 1999, comprised of the officers and staff who support the FCA, FCFCOA, and NNTT (including corporate services). The statutory agency is distinct to the Federal Court and to the Entity.

 

The National Legal and Policy Adviser provides critical support and assistance to the Chief Justice and CEO/PR. This includes carrying out high level legal and policy work, legal research, undertaking high level analysis regarding the Courts work, preparing complex correspondence and reports and drafting submissions from all areas of the Courts’ jurisdiction. The National Legal and Policy Adviser will also develop policies and protocols across a broad range of issues relating to the administration of the Court and liaise with a range of internal and external stakeholders.

 

The role is multi-dimensional, requiring highly developed analytical and legal skills, agility and organisational skills, together with strong communication and interpersonal skills. The person appointed to this position will be someone who anticipates what needs to be done, shows great initiative, is highly motivated and organised, efficient and able to work under pressure.

Some travel may be required.
