Our Opportunity

The Media and Communications Director plays an important role in effectively communicating the work of the ALRC to stakeholders and the broader community, including through media releases, the ALRC website and ALRC events. The Director is responsible for designing and implementing communication strategies that position the ALRC as a centre of excellence and the leading Australian agency for law reform. To enhance the ALRC’s audience reach, the Director will develop and implement innovative ways of presenting the work of the ALRC to the broader Australian Community.

Specific requirements of the role:

  • engaging in strategic communications with stakeholders and managing media relations and ALRC events to enhance the profile of the ALRC;
  • providing high level media advice, developing and maintaining relationships with the media, writing media releases and responding to media enquiries;
  • providing expert guidance and professional development to the ALRC research teams on writing style, report structure and Plain English;
  • assisting to summarise and present the work of the ALRC in a way that is accessible to the broader community, including initiating and implementing innovative, tailored
  • communications strategies for particular projects as appropriate, such as videos, online surveys, and content in a range of accessible formats;
  • managing the editing, proofreading, layout and production of ALRC publications, including inquiry reports and the annual report. This includes managing supplier relationships with
  • external editors, designers and printers as needed;
  • designing, organising and publicizing ALRC events to showcase the work of the ALRC and facilitate engagement with stakeholders and the general public; and
  • managing the ALRC’s online communications, including website, e-newsletters and social media, and liaising with external web developers as necessary.

Selection Criteria:

  1. Experience with strategic communications and management of, and advice on, media relations;
  2. Experience with typesetting, document design and publishing tools;
  3. Managing and developing a website, online membership databases, and discussion boards and blogs and of using the web as a communications tool to build relationships and community engagement;
  4. Experience with designing and implementing events and conferences;
  5. Experience managing online publications and audiovisual content development for the web including publishing in a range of formats and as epublications;
  6. Ability to produce clear, concise and well-presented written material and experience with editing content for the web;
  7. Ability to take initiative and responsibility for projects, to set priorities and to manage multiple projects to meet deadlines;
  8. Demonstrated ability to work in a team-based environment;
  9. Understanding of the Public Service Values
