About our client… 
Our client is an iconic governing sporting body, who oversee one of the largest team sports in Victoria including the promotion, administration and delivery of sporting activities across the state.  Their passionate team of 80 staff, who genuinely have a love for this sport, help to deliver over 40,000 matches every season! They are also enjoying huge success and exciting times at a national level, with a world class head office located 15km North/East of CBD. 

With a number of key senior appointments and further growth expected in the next 12 months, they are now seeking to appoint an experienced Senior Legal Counsel/Commercial Lawyer (envisage 5 years + PAE) to their dedicated team.  
  
About this role…
As the sole internal legal counsel, this will be an autonomous role and is the contact point for managing legal issues, framework & risks and the provision of legal advice on a broad range of issues across their business that may include areas such as sponsorship and media rights; venues; risk & compliance management; legislative obligations; marketing strategies; integrity and litigation issues. This will include for example:

  • Drafting, reviewing and advising on commercial agreements(including with government funding bodies, service providers, member organisations, partners and sponsors), team participation agreements and collective player agreements;
  • Drafting, reviewing, and updating policies and procedures to mitigate legal and business risks and ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements including OH&S;
  • Contributing to and delivering legal education and induction initiatives;
  • Oversight of Tribunal function and attending tribunal hearings as requested;
  • Assist with integrity matters, including child safety and member protection, litigation and dispute resolution;
  • Managing and developing legal precedents and templates, adapting procurement and contract processes to meet business needs, providing training to business users, and empowering them to self-serve where appropriate.

This is a 3 day per week position, with potential to flex up to 4 days during peak season, if suitable. There is also flexibility to work some days from home.

About you…
Ideal candidates will have: 
  
Minimum 5 years+ post admission experience as a commercial lawyer. Previous in-house experience is preferred.

  • Previous legal experience gained in a sporting organisation will be highly regarded.  
  • Excellent negotiation/influencing/drafting skills with ability to effectively manage competing priorities;
  • Ability to discuss/review risks (legal, financial, commercial and technical) with key stakeholders;
  • Highly developed, effective communication skills – both written & oral;
  • An approachable manner, with a pro-active ‘hands on’ approach in order to assist others in a team environment;
  • Ability to build relationships, balancing commercial business requirements with internal control and regulatory demands; and
  • Current working with children’s check or ability to obtain one.
